If you are reading this blog and asking that question, then this is a good time to answer it for you. I'll do my best to define "niche" for you to help you understand why it is so important to find yours.
Without being too technical, I'll first present the definition.
Niche - a focused, targetable part of a market.
(from InvestorWords.com)
In every day terms, that means find something that you love and can get excited about. Figure how to market the product, the story line, the service, the blog concept, the book subject, whatever it is. The niche can be any thing. My friend Katy loves Nascar so she creates "niche blogs" for Nascar and passionately writes about the sport, the drivers and the races.
I love historical costumes and renaissance faires. Ideally, I can create a blog about faires and the clothing. This could be used in many ways such as marketing costumes, selling tickets to events, or as a journalism outlet to enhance my career as a writer. Fashion is a larger niche with historical costumes falling into a category underneath that and renaissance faires falling into the category of a specialized niche.
My daughter loves gardening so she could focus on a business where she sells only organic plants or medicinal herbs. That would be another specialized niche.
There are so many ideas and so many categories in the "niche topic" that its almost endless. You get the idea.
Find your niche. Grow it. Build it. Write about it. Market it. Experience the passion.
